What to do when you have two jean jackets in your closet and you realize you never wear one of them? What if you also live in a one hundred year old house with painfully limited closet space? Everything has gotta earn its closet real estate in this place! I do not mess around.
This very jean jacket was hovering over the donate pile. Just in time for a rescue, I decided to play with it. I’m so immensely glad I did. It’s my new favorite spring jacket now! I’m calling it the overly loved jean jacket. Ha!
What really turned things around was that while dreaming of how to rescue this denim dream, I discovered that my patch of sashiko stitching fit perfectly on the back. I completed this perfectly imperfect bit of stitching under the tutelage of the amazing Jessica Marquez. Jessica is an absolutely fabulous instructor and I learned how to stitch from her while co-teaching a workshop soon after we collaborated on these espadrilles.
I am completely aware that my stitches are wonky and parts are disconnected and incomplete but I cannot bring myself to care. I’ve always been intimidated by embroidery or any form of stitching that involves precision. So, I conquered a fear with this project and it makes me very happy.
Look at that overall design! So fabulous. I can’t be bothered to get down on the stitch imperfections, I’m too smitten with the look of all of it.
The ultimate cherry on top was this lovely, sequined floral patch that I picked up on a shopping spree years ago at FabScrap. It must have been a pre-pandemic trip so it was a long time ago! I hand-stitched the patch on so it’s very secure and I love how it swoops around my waist.
The two pieces form such a great contrast of rigid and chaos. I love how they pulls the jacket together. Yay for inventive reimagining.
I had so much fun embellishing and improving and loving up this neglected jean jacket. It’s absolutely my favorite now. This overly loved jean jacket has definitely earned it’s spot in my tiny closet.
A few notes on my outfit, my jumpsuit and the jean jacket are both secondhand, bought on ThredUp. I’m wearing Katie Kortman fabric espadrilles, available here.
As many of you may now, I’m in my seventh year of not buying anything new. Yup! Still going strong. Its an experience I love and I’m hoping to write a post about it soon with everything I’ve learned and what makes it so vividly creative as well as quite simple!
Hope this encourages you to show some love to a neglected item in your closet!
