Every time I come across Sashiko stitches something inside of me calms. Its beautiful meditative nature and orderliness evokes both a love of beauty as well as an appreciation of craft. Sashiko is an art form that is functional, simple but stunning, and mindful by nature. This is exactly why I am delighted to present the latest in the Artist Series…Sashiko Espadrille Shoes from Jessica Marquez of Miniature Rhino!
Full kits are available HERE and the PDF only is available HERE.

These striking sashiko espadrille shoes will make a fabulous project for relaxing in the spring sunshine with a needle and thread.
Jessica of Miniature Rhino is a creative hero of mine and it’s a dream to collaborate with her. She always aligns her work with her values in such an admirable way. She re-uses textiles destined for the landfill in her MR Pattern Club, teaches hundreds creative ways to mend in her landmark book Make + Mend and her workshops specifically focus on extending the life of garments (Ahem! Rear-end focus anyone?).
Additionally, she infuses her artwork and products with her concern for being gentle on the earth and ecologically conscious. This is yet another reason I’m really excited to be releasing these Sashiko Espadrille shoe kits with a new textile!
If you’ve been following me for a long time you know that I’ve struggled to find organic outer fabric for the espadrille kits. Well, I’m happy to announce that these kits will include a new organic cotton/hemp blend of canvas!
Light on the earth but high on design impact for the shoes!

Jessica Marquez is a teacher, author and the artist behind the handmade shop Miniature Rhino. She’s the author of two books: Make and Mend (Ten Speed, 2018) and Stitched Gifts (Chronicle, 2012).
Jessica is a lifelong maker who found her way back to textiles while working on an MFA in Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. After countless hours working digitally, retouching images and staring at a computer screen she longed for hands-on analog making. She taught herself embroidery and then never stopped stitching. In 2008 she started a creative handmade business, Miniature Rhino, named after a young cousin’s imaginary friend, a dentist she called Dr. Rhino.
Miniature Rhino became a symbol of creativity and imagination and seeks to inspire and teach hands-on skills. Her work has been featured in publications including In the Company of Women, Real Simple, Bust, Country Living, and InStyle magazine.
