My heart holds a special place for well-made, beautifully-presented kits that bring the magic of making right to your door. I’m talking about more than my espadrilles kits, which I obviously adore and pour my heart and soul into. Indeed, once relegated to the sad discount table with their components sticking out of a run-down box kits may have a bad rap but there is a blossoming world of fresh, new, creative kits out there and it’s so exciting. Stunning, high-quality, adult-oriented kits have become a standard for creative exploration within the maker community. Some offer an entry point to a more challenging art form and others simply a spectacular way to find mindful, creative time. With all of this in mind, I gathered together the ultimate maker kits perfect for cozy fall creating.
I hope you find some inspiration in this list of 15 maker kits. It’s been a difficult time and we all deserve some quiet magical making time.
1. Spoon Carving Kit from Melanie Abrantes
Melanie’s kit teaches you how to design, carve and hollow out a spoon. How cool is that? This kit comes with three different spoon blanks so it’s easy to keep going once you find yourself addicted…just speculating that might happen.
2. Sashiko Mini Sampler Kit from Jessica Marquez of Miniature Rhino
The lovely Jessica Marquez created these beautiful kits to usher all of us embroidery-challenged folks into the beautiful world of white thread on blue fabric. Can’t imagine a better way to relax on a fall afternoon.
3. Flax & Twine’s Woven Patterned Bracelet Kit
While Anne Weil of Flax and Twine offers a lot of fabulous kits, this one is my absolute favorite. I’ve had it in my to-do drawer (yes, it’s a drawer) for a while now and am hoping to pull it out this November. Cuff bracelets are so stunning already but the weaving really elevates this handmade jewelry. Plus, it comes in a few color options.
4. Cross Stitch Kits from Junebug and Darlin
These cross stitch kits take a sweet tradition and modernize it with fresh designs and badass sayings. What better maker kit to gift to your ride or die this holiday or anytime!
4. Hand-Sewing Kits from Fibr & Cloth
Alexis Bailey from Fibr & Cloth has taken the concept of slow sewing and mindful making and turned it into a lovingly created kit with options from tops, totes and coasters. You choose and she does the work of prepping and cutting the fabric so you can sit and sew. Grab one of these soon! They sell out in a heartbeat.
5. Ink & Spindle Cushion and Bucket kits
Ink and Spindle has an impressive selection of fabric bucket and cushion kits in their understated but stunning prints. I’m partial to this fabric bucket but all the options are an interior designers dream.
6. The Clay Resist Printing Kit from Love of Colour
Used in conjunction with the indigo dye kit, this clay resist project is so fun. You create your own designs with the clay resist and it doesn’t wash away when you dip it in indigo!
7. Madalynne’s Lawren Bodysuit DIY kit
You know what is super annoying? Almost as annoying as sourcing the individual components you need for creating espadrilles (wink), it’s finding all the little doo-dads you need to create amazing lingerie. Madalynne is here for us. Her kits not only bring us all the right materials but they come in options the make a cold evening red hot. Know what I mean? 😉
8. Punch Needle Kits from Bookhou and Harrisville
You already know that I’m a huge fan of Arounna’s punch needling. Her punch needle slippers are a favorite around here. So, I was super excited to see she had partnered with Harrisville Designs to create two beautiful punch needle wall hangings. These are not only a fun project but also a great way to add texture to your interior design!
9. Anna Joyce’s Ice Dye kits
A perpetual favorite of Etsy’s Favorites list, these Ice Dye Kits are THE BEST! Anna Joyce not only includes everything you need but she also hand-selects a stunning color scheme that guarantees you will succeed. If you’ve never ice dyed before you really need to start. It’s easy, creative and always turns out amazing!
10. Textile Sun Print Kits with Embroidery from Betz White
Using pre-treated fabric sheets, this kit sets you up for a beautiful sun print process and THEN (but wait…there’s more) encourages you to embroider over it for a stunning, layered effect. The last time I did sun printing I used leaves from our old house to memorialize a special place to my family. Just imagine what you could create with this kit…even a one-of-a-kind patch for a jean jacket or frame it for the wall!
11. Clog-Making Kits from Leather Needle Thread
Take your shoe-making to the next level with fabulous DIY clogs in an assortment of colors. Available, along with bag-making kits, from Leather Needle Thread.
12. Macrame Wall Hanging from Emily Katz at Modern Macrame
I don’t know about you but I had these hanging in my basement as a kid and nothing makes me happier than the resurgence of interest in macrame. Bring back all the 70s stuff! Of course, Emily from Modern Macrame manages to move it from the kitshy days into the calm, serene aesthetic of now. As an added bonus, these kits are affordable and make it so accessible.
Bonus : Sold Out Now but Worth Stalking
13. Leather Bag-Making from Nikki & Mallory
Treasure from Nikki & Mallory has just launched a kit collection (and it very promptly sold out) to accompany her incredible handmade bags. These are sure include her meticulous instructions making sure it’s easy to create a stunning DIY bag that no one would even imagine was made at home.
14. Sophie Hines’ Period Panties
Reusable period panties that you can sew yourself! I committed to not buying any new clothing seven years ago BEFORE products like period panties made it on the market so I was thrilled to discover this option for making them myself. I haven’t bought a kit yet but I look forward to it. Sophie mentions on her site that these are great for kids just getting their period. Gotta love that idea! She is taking a small break from shipping out kits but keep watch for her return.
15. Maker Mountain Sewing Self-Care Surprise Kits
A wonderful surprise delight for those sewing mavens who love a surprise. Grace from Maker Mountain packages a surprise sewing kit for you based on answers to a few questions. Watching Instagram around the time these are sent out is pure sunshine. Everyone is so happy to receive a sewing surprise!
Update! Just got word that her next release will be October 15-17 and then again on December 17-19. Perfect timing for gift-giving! Watch her Instagram to catch these releases.
