This weekend I picked up about a half dozen pink tops and sweaters at the thrift store and turned them into 21 pussyhats. I’m attending a local Women’s March on Saturday and wanted to wear the eponymous pink hat and knew several of my friends also would. I’m not much of a knitter but figured I could sew a quick and easy pussyhat with old sweaters. If you don’t know about pussyhats, they are the playful, pink “kitten-eared” hats marchers are wearing in the upcoming marches happening in D.C. and 200 other sister cities on Saturday, January 21st. You can read more about the idea behind the effort here. I know! Saturday is tomorrow! But if you are dying to wear a pussyhat, there is still time! These are so easy to make! There is definitely still time! Here is my DIY for quick and easy pussyhats.
- Start with a thrift store sweater or a pink sweater from your closet that you don’t wear anymore. Because you are using a sewing machine, it will be easier to sew a non-chunky sweater. That chunky sweater up there was the biggest pain to sew!
2. Cut out two sweater squares sized 11″ by 10″. Depending on the sweater, you may be able to cut a strip 11″ by 19″. The 11″ side is the bottom and top of the hat.
3. Place the squares right sides together and pin on three sides. If your were able to cut a long strip, fold it in half and pin and sew on the two short sides.
4. Stitch along the three pinned sides and turn right side out. Fold up the bottom hem 2 inches and sew with a zigzag or lightening bolt stitch around the bottom band. This will be the only visible stitch.
Bam! You are done and ready to make some noise!
P.S. I look so ridiculous in hats! I hope you know this means I really love you!

There is a march in Canada? Oh my goodness, that makes my heart sing! I’m thrilled this was helpful!

There’s at least 3 marches that I know of planned on Vancouver Island alone, plus what I imagine will be a large one in Vancouver. I read on the A Mighty Girl fb page that there are approximately 600 marches planned in over 60 countries. It’s amazing!
