It’s become something of a tradition for me to make the boys pajamas during Kids’ Clothes Week. Considering how much they love wild animals, especially wild cats, it was only fitting that this time around the pajamas have wild animals on them. It’s also fitting because these days the two of them together act like wild animals most of the time, complete with wrestling and showmanship; even heavy, dramatic emotions that dissipate quickly. Parenting them is like watching one of those natures show with dry commentary, “Together, the cubs play by jumping on and running alongside each other…even starting small fights intended to prepare them for the alpha male fights to come in their grown-up years”.
Yup. Wild animals in pajamas with wild animals on them. That is what these two are. More specifically, one cheetah and one alligator.
The fabulous, fabulous animal print fabric is from Spoonflower. This was my first ever purchase of spoonflower fabric and I am totally sold! The cheetah print is from designer Andrea Lauren, whose geometric bear design has long been a favorite of mine. The alligator fabric was designed by the uber-talented Holli Zollinger. I seriously want every single one of her hip, fresh design in my own closet but her Folka collection especially takes my breath away…who can resist hot pink flying pigs! Not this girl! I also ordered yardage of this zebrini print but haven’t made anything with it yet. I ordered these prints on Spoonflower’s modern jersey (not to be confused with performance knit), it has 4% spandex content, which gives it a pretty decent 4-way stretch and recovery. It’s also soft but not quite as soft as a laguna knit, for example. The lovely muted blue and grey strip fabric is Riley Blake. I do not remember where I got it, sorry!
The tops are my old standby, the raglan tee from Sewing For Boys book (affiliate link). I seriously love this top. I did have to grade up to make these tops in a size 6T and 8T, the book goes up to 5T, I believe. I self-drafted the pajama bottoms by taking the boys measurements; only problem is I forgot to add in enough ease. The pj bottoms are super tight…like Peter Pan on Broadway tight! Essentially, I made them tights. Such a rookie mistake. That’s the truth. I’ll be back at the drawing board for those. I mean they can get them on but not easily. And, that is no good when it comes to pajamas! Bedtime is complicated enough as it is.
I really love the pajamas tradition, both boys like wearing mama-made pjs even though they are growing out of wearing other mama-mades.
These two wild animals have got a lot of secrets to share these days. Mama is just trying to keep up. 🙂
