Layering Tank

In addition to the rolled hem tunic, the tee tunic and the fancy neckline tee, I also hacked my Plantain Tee to turn it into a simple layering tank.  This tank top isn’t exactly a show-stopper but I gotta make some clothing staples.  The Nothing New Project is no joke and means not everything I make can be exciting.  Besides, I’ve been looking for the kind of tank top that I can wear under some of my patterned woven tops.  Just a good solid layered look.

I made a handful of modifications to the original pattern for this one. First, I took out a bit of the flare at the waist.  Essentially, I took a triangular shaped wedge out of the pattern, with the base of the triangle at the hem. I wanted the tank to fit a little more snugly at my tummy.  I also added 4 inches to the length and that is another reason I had to remove some of the flare in the original design.  If I had lengthened it without reducing some of the a-line shape, the hem of the tank wouldn’t sit near my hips but would be flow-y instead.  Not the look I wanted.

I, of course, left off the sleeves.  To hem the neck and arms I added a small band that I don’t think makes it look too much like a muscle shirt.

The most important modification was adjusting the shoulders to make them thinner.  I took the outside end of the shoulders in my one inch and and the inside by half and inch.  It worked pretty well. The fabric is a Robert Kaufman laguna knits in Pepper. It’s one of my favorite knit fabrics, I love the color and the laguna knits have a great stretch and softness. I got it at Rock Paper Scissors again.

The tank is super wearable and the added length makes it very mom-life-ready.  I might even make some more of these.  So far, the heat and humidity in New Jersey have been almost comical.  It’s like it will never let up.  Might be a tank top, feet in the kiddie pool kind of summer. That is a serious Plantain Tee win if you ask me.
