Sometimes I like to make a whole bunch of easy things and feel the thrill of accomplishment that comes from making lots of things. But, sometimes, I want to stretch myself and learn something new, gain skills and put another skill in the skill box. These jeans (!) represent some of that stretching and pushing. And, howdy-do I have made real-live jeans! Old cheesy face up there isn’t showing it but he really likes them.
These are the Titchy Threads pattern company and are called Small Fry Skinny Jeans (part of the Perfect Pattern Parcel #4 bundle) and I would not want to break into the world of jeans with any other pattern by my side. This pattern has been calling my name for a while but I was a little intimidated. I mean, its jeans…and real-looking jeans at that. Surely everyone else making these jeans is just better than I am at sewing and putting in zippers and things. Right? Well, I’m so happy I went for it. The pattern is just as good as people say, It just really holds your hand the whole way through. And, thank goodness for that because these took some doing. For reals.
They are supposed to be made stretch denim but I really wanted to make them with the same Robert Kaufman chambray union woven fabric I used for my shorts for myself (I got it here) because the fabric is beautiful. It worked great; the jeans don’t require tons of stretch to work beautifully.
The details on these jeans make them such an accomplishment. Not only does the pattern walk through putting in a half-fly zipper (!!) but look at those flat-felled seams! The belt loops! The perfect pockets! I will confess that there was a good deal of seam ripping and possibly even some serious swearing when making these professional-looking jeans. For starters, the fact that my fabric is reversible made it hard to keep track of times when I wanted the fabric ‘wrong-sides-together’, for instance. For some reason, the flat-felled seams were a mind-bender for me…I physically resist when fabric isn’t right-sides together! Like I keep saying, however, the pattern really helped me along. It’s like having a friend at your side when you mess up as much as I did.
I definitely feel like I need to make a second pair before I could consider myself a master at the half-fly zipper. None of my mess-ups, however, are stealing my thunder because WAHOO! I made jeans!
Look at that cute little boy butt in those cute little jeans!!
My only regret with these lovely jeans is that I got impatient at the end and didn’t put in the adjustable elastic waistband. Sure enough, the waist is a bit big on Little J so I may have to unstitch (argh!) a little more and put that in. Of course, the pattern shows you how. I could also make a belt like this one.
Perfect Pattern Parcel is truly a pattern bundle at its best! It’s a set-your-own price deal (really! you decide what to pay!) but if you pay over $26 you get the bonus pattern, The Knight Hoodie. The value of this pack of patterns is $61 total! On top of that, you can dedicate part of your payment to a charity that helps fund needy schools and any excess funds go straight to the charity as well. It’s a no-brainer if you have boys because good boy-oriented patterns are already so hard to find. And, it ends this Friday, September 5th, so jump on it.

They look amazing Melissa and your topstitching is so neat! The texture of that fabric is lovely, it gives an unexpected detail close up. I’m so happy to hear you liked the pattern so much.
