Joni Jumpsuit

December 8, 2020 By Melissa Q. Leave a Comment

There have been phases to THESE COVID TIMES, haven’t there? I’m realizing it’s possible to summarize each progressive state of being by the clothing worn.  For example, I started in the Pajamas All Day phase and then switched to Yoga Pants All Day phase with a brief Must Wear Real Clothes phase. Of course, we are now DEEP into this #quarantinelife and I’m working on a soul-satisfying merge of Real Clothes Life and Yoga Pants Life.  Turns out, the Joni Jumpsuit from Friday Pattern Company situated itself into that sweet spot.

This luxuriously comfortable Joni is made in a lightweight, super soft French Terry from B and J Fabrics.  The fabric was purchased over a year ago. I’m proud of my past self, buying high quality soft fabric so I can enjoy sewing from my stash!

In the jumpsuit, my tummy and all my other parts have plenty of room to do their thing.  I’m kinda over holding them in, to be honest.

One adaptation I made was to line the bodice with a tight ribbing fabric. The ribbing gives it more structure and allowed me to squeeze the jumpsuit out of not-quite-enough-fabric.

As per usual, the bodice is one size down from the pant legs. My hips, the juicy beings that they are, really dictate the sizing on the bottom. They need room to mooove and groove, baby.

The back of the Joni Jumpsuit is really the highlight. This lovely criss-cross of straps is pure elegance and chic comfort.

I did change a few other things. For starters, I omitted the zipper. As it turns out, I found the fabric stretchy enough to simply untie and pull on and off rather than fuss with a zipper. I’m hoping the wear and tear won’t weaken the fabric over time but I will report back on that.

Also, very controversially, I omitted THE POCKETS! Dude, I know! Pockets are so fabulous BUT in this material I think they just do this dragging thing as soon as they are holding more than a nickel’s worth of weight! I just can’t have it. I realize the great pocket debate will rage for years but I am not afraid to admit that sometimes no pockets is better than lumpy pockets.

For now, I’m gonna throw jackets and cardigan sweaters over my comfy, self-love Joni and try to ride this phase through winter.  What is on your body these days? You feeling these phases too?
