this summer I’m making a real effort to incorporate more activities and art projects into our day. the boys love unstructured lego/block/music/car/truck/coloring time but they are also old enough to enjoy a more defined and goal-oriented activity. I’m not particularly ambitious about these activities but I find it so handy to be able to break up the day with something unexpected and new. some of my ideas have completely flopped, some of them were too difficult and so they found them frustrating, some have been so easy that they lost interest but this one–painting their names on canvas– was a winner. I got the idea from Pinterest (my board of summer activities is here). the supplies for this project are a painter’s canvas, finger paints, brushes and rollers, and blue painters tape. we happened to have all of these things already around the house.
the boys decided what they wanted to spell out…their names and then I cut and laid out their names on the canvas with the painters tape. using the finger paint they brushed and rolled all over the canvas (neither of them like the feel of paint on their hands).
after they were done (I let them decide when they were done and I was very proud that they did actually declare the painting done before the whole canvas was a muddy olive green) we left it to dry. then, all that was left to do was peel off the tape.
voila! they love it and my persistence has paid off!
