Color-Blocked Julia Cardigan in Sweater Knit (for my Mom)

Color-Blocked Julia Cardigan | a happy stitch

Hey look! It’s my mom! Isn’t she the cutest, most beautiful person? She was visiting us from Minnesota this weekend and we decided to go out for a fancy-ish dinner but she had nothing  to wear.  I grabbed this color-blocked Julia cardigan (literally pulled it fresh off my sewing table) and I soon as she put it on I knew it belonged to her. I hadn’t even worn once it myself but it was obvious it was fated to be hers. She just looks great in it, don’t you think? Honestly, meant to be. (more…)

last-minute gifts & well wishes

peace and joy in 2014From our family to yours, we wish you all the best in 2014!  It’s been an amazing year and we are prepped and ready for an incredible holiday season.  But, it wouldn’t be nearly as wonderful and amazing as it has been without all of you.  I love the connections, heartfelt and full, that have been made through this little blog and thank all of you so much for reading and cheering me on!

In that spirit, I’m sharing my favorite last-minute gifts! First up is this incredible infinity scarf tutorial from imagine gnats:

One of my students turned me on to this tute and I’m so glad. She managed to whip of 6 of them in one morning!  I made these two in a jiffy… they definitely came together easily.

Another favorite of mine is the small wallet.  This $3 pattern from Valori Wells makes a great wallet…an easy and cute way to give cash or a gift card without feeling awkward.  It’s my go-to teacher gift!

Now, I really hope your gifting is done and you are nestling somewhere enjoying the quiet and ready to relax.  But, just in case, you are wondering what to make and eyeing your machine, I hope these tips come in handy.

I, for one, am about to polish off a bottle of red wine and kick some butt at a game of Scrabble before I play Santa! Happy Holidays all!! You are the best.

a huge thank you to everyone who took part in the exchange. I can get a little sappy about these things but I really, really love how it feels to exchange handmade goods. there are so many things out there trying make us cynical and worried and afraid of each other. I like to think that exchanging something you made with your time, your heart and your hand is a little spark of good in the midst of all that. and, just like that we are all winners!

special thanks to the amazing Rachael of imagine gnats for being the bestest hostess! she is just the cleverest.

the covert robin

ok makers! it’s time to step. it. up!

I’m so thrilled to have been chosen as a co-host for this year’s covert robin over at imagine gnats!  and, that means you are going to sign up! yes?  yes.  why are you going to sign up? because, this is going to be gobs of fun. for reals.

what is the covert robin?

the covert robin is a round-robin gift exchange of handmade presents. you get to make something special for another person/blogger, and in return you receive your very own handmade present from a mystery gifter (your “covert robin”). if you have never participated in a swap before you might be wondering about this whole thing. let me tell you, there really is something wonderful about making something for a stranger and then receiving something lovely in return. it can restore a little faith in the goodness of people and open a person up to the expansiveness of the crafty world.  sounds nice, doesn’t it.

for this exchange, the handmade gifts should have an approximate retail value between $20 and $30. i know this can be tricky, so if you have any questions about what is/is not appropriate, please don’t hesitate to email me: ahappystitch {at} gmail.com or reach out to our fearless leader rachael {at} imaginegnats {dot} com.  [just for starters, when I price things I add the cost of my materials plus an hourly rate for the amount of time it takes me to make something.]

not sure what to send? last year there was a huge variety of items including things that were sewn, made from paper, baked goods and even beautiful artwork… anything is game, as long as it’s made by you! so, go for it! explore a new technique that you’ve been wanting to try or make something tried and true.  want some inspiration? you can see some posts about last year’s gifts in the link-up here.

how does it work?

once sign-ups close on february 28th, rachel and all the co-hosts will assign everyone a gift recipient.  after receiving your recipient, you’ll make your gift and send it off to them.  and here’s the extra fun part for you bloggers out there: you can blog about the gift you made and/or the gift you received for a chance to win prizes!  we’ll host a linky party starting april 1, and each of the co-hosts will be randomly awarding one participant a prize (that’s TEN chances to win!). you can keep up with covert robin updates here.  but, if you don’t have a blog do not let that stop you!  participate!  this is open to anyone and the swapping and the making and the arrival of a mystery gift if so much fun no matter what!  so crank up your creativity and jump in.

when does this happen?
sign-ups: open NOW… through february 28
recipient information: will be emailed by march 4
gifts: must be mailed by march 31
blog post link-up: open april 1-30
