I know. You didn’t even know that a ‘mountain-scape tunic’ was a thing? Because it is not. And, you know whose closet doesn’t need one? This girl. I got started on this idea after seeing a top in a random catalog I receive called Poetry. Except their top was darker colors and more artsy-looking. (It doesn’t look like it’s even available anymore.) I thought I would recreate it and then my brain piped up with a contribution of its own, “what is better than a top? The answer is always a tunic! Let’s make ours special by making a tunic! Yeah, a tunic!” So, I shopped for a similar fabric and found this mountain-scape fabric on the Mood website. It was brighter and more figurative but was the closest I could find. So, I went for it. My brain is still excited and egging me on. “Yes! A bright and detailed mountain-scape tunic!” Well, as it turns out I don’t need a mountain-scape tunic. Like, I don’t need it at all.
I used the Plantain Tee pattern from Deer and Doe, my old standby. Nothing is the fault of the pattern. I actually like how the tunic turned out from the perspective of how it fits. It is also very comfortable. It’s just, you know, its got green, blue and purple mountains all over it. I thought maybe I could wear this to the area pool but even then I feel kind of silly. I’m still decently proud of the fact that I did line up my mountain on the side seam.
I just made a tunic out of the wrong fabric. It happens. In fact, it might just be possible that I wouldn’t make anything I actually love without the handful of things that bomb. If I didn’t take the occasional walk down mountain-scape lane I would be being too careful. And too careful is just no fun and not very interesting. I’m bummed for sure, especially since I’m trying to be conscientious about making things I will actually wear. I guess this is just so funny that I can’t take it that hard. Have you messed up lately? Was it devastating or funny or both? Don’t you agree that mess-up can sometimes be launching pads for the good stuff?

I actually think it’s really cute and looks great on you. I didn’t see the inspiration version, but I’d put this in the “success” column if I were you!

You are the sweetest. Yes, it’s hard that I can’t find the original inspiration version on-line. I should say that the original was more artistic looking and edge-y while this one turned out brighter and ‘nicer’ if that makes sense. It’s not a complete disaster but it’s more on the cute side while I was going for sophisticated. On that measure, it’s a bomb. 🙂

I also think it looks great, the fit is spot on and I really like it, would your wear it more as a tshirt? I always follow the ideas in my head and it’s always hit and miss to whether they work or not, it’s good to be creative.

It’s so true! It is good to be creative and not always play it safe. That’s the upside. It’s true that I could wear it over jeans in the fall, that could work actually. It is good to follow the ideas in our head. I’m just accepting that this time it led me astray! Ha!

Shorten it to a tee and wear it with skinny jeans! You’ll look fab 🙂
It’s always interesting to see if a vision and the result match, too often they don’t for me!
Melissa Q. says
I may do that, at least it is more wearable as a tee. It’s hard to know where to cut it off!! It is tricky to match vision with reality but that’s the goal, isn’t it!

I’m with Henni – shorten it to a t-shirt and I bet you’ll wear it a bunch! It is really cute.
Melissa Q. says
I’m thinking that more and more, thanks to these comments. I like the neckline and it’s very wearable as a t-shirt. The fabric has some polyester content, which I don’t love the feel of, but I still think I’d wear it more as a tee.

I think it looks good on you, too, but I totally understand that if you aren’t ‘feeling it’ you just aren’t feelin it.
My last two garment attempts have been flops. I don’t find it amusing, but I also didn’t throw the old ‘I can’t make anything good’ pity party I once would have 😉
Melissa Q. says
Oh exactly! The “I suck” pity party phase is the worst. I’m glad that I’m mostly over putting myself through that drama.
