It seems that my sewing this year has inadvertently taken on a theme and that theme is comfort. I’m terrible at tolerating cold weather and now that I mostly work at home there are rarely times when leggings and a cozy sweatshirt isn’t the answer to every “what should I wear” dilemma. So, I have been calling out to the universe for the perfect cold weather sweatshirt since the beginning of the year and the response I got was Lane Raglan Hoodie from Hey June Handmade. I made this version a while back in a rayon jersey for the Upcraft Club blog and I loved it but the rayon jersey is very lightweight. Perfect for a cool summer evening at the beach but I needed serious snuggle weather sweatshirt. When I saw a double layer jersey fabric at Rock Paper Scissors, my LQS, I flipped out and bought as much as they had left.
You might be wondering what is double layer jersey? It’s basically the double gauze of jersey fabric. Two layers of soft, stretchy sweatshirt-like material held together in little pinpoints all over the place. See those little wrinkles on the sweatshirt? Those are the joining stitches. It’s unbelievably soft and so warm. I have only seen it from Robert Kaufman and I hope I have enough left over to make the boys pajamas with it because it is just heavenly. Plus, those delicious boys will be extra super snuggly in double layer jersey pajamas.
And this sweatshirt, this sweet Lane Raglan Hoodie is just the perfect use for this fabric. I decided to line the hood with a hot pink terry fabric. I know! Hot pink! It just needed a pop of hot pink. Needed. I had to search high and low for the hot pink, too. I finally found some on Etsy.
It’s a bit oversized, which is perfect for what I wanted and makes it very comfy but I might try a smaller size next time. Just as I did when I made my first Lane Raglan Hoodie I lengthened the waistband to extend the length of the sweatshirt overall. This time, however, I sized up only the waistband to the L so it doesn’t hug my hips and extends straight down instead. I also included the thumbholes because making thumbholes makes me feel fancy and accomplished.
All in all, it’s a great everyday wear sweatshirt and I’ve already worn the heck out of it. As I continue on a path of not buying anything new, wearable essentials like this hoodie get more and more exciting.
As a funny little peek into my brain and it’s functioning I have to share a seemingly off-topic story. My sister and her sweetheart just adopted a pitbull who was found living in the streets. He is the sweetest, most loving piece of pure muscle I’ve ever met. He’s also mildly neurotic and missing a toe. It’s not easy, the hard-scrabble life on the streets. Anyway, my sister being my sister is taking care of this dog with a ridiculous amount of heart. One of the things they have done to help calm his nerves is buy him a sweatshirt that fits really snug. They call it a ‘forever hug’ sweatshirt because it is intended to give him the good feeling of a hug at all times. I know, so sweet. Well, as soon as I put on my lane raglan hoodie I declared it my forever hug. And, it most certainly is. Making your own clothes is a little bit of a crazy endeavour but when you can make your own double layer jersey forever hug with a hot pink hood…that is pure awesome!
Another random. I cannot stop thinking this hood makes me look like Very Lonely Luke. I mean, c’mom. It’s totally Luke Skywalker at the top of of the cliff in Force Awakens!
Extra thanks to Melanie Tuazon for (very generously) taking my picture and for planting hilarious ideas in my brain.

Does the pattern call for a lined hood, or did you have to figure that out? Love it!
Melissa Q. says
Good question. I figured it out myself. I just made two hoods and stitched them together at the front seam and then did everything else just the same.

Aw it’s adorable! I tend to wear my loungewear handmades more than anything else (except my archers maybe, hehe). Really nicely done. Love the “forever hug” idea too!! :*
Melissa Q. says
Totally! There’s definitely lots of wearability with the loungewear.
